How Setbacks Shape Stronger Leaders

Leadership isn’t about having it all figured out, it’s about resilience, adaptability, and the willingness to keep going despite challenges.
Watching my daughter navigate the adaptive ski program has been such an inspiring experience. Every time she falls, she gets back up. Every time she faces an obstacle, she finds a way around it. She doesn’t dwell on setbacks, she learns from them.
As leaders, how often do we get stuck in frustration when things don’t go as planned? How often do we hesitate to try again after a failure?
Here’s what I’ve learned from her:
✔ Fall, but don’t stay down. Setbacks are inevitable, but progress happens when we choose to get back up.
✔ Adjust, don’t quit. When something isn’t working, pivot instead of abandoning the goal.
✔ Surround yourself with the right support. No one succeeds alone. The best leaders build strong teams and communities that lift them up.
Leadership, like skiing, is about forward motion. The key is learning how to navigate the tough parts and keep moving.
What’s one challenge you’ve faced recently, and how did you push through?
